Suddenly Love – Chapter 7

Chapter 7
Love in the air

The ballroom of one of the fanciest hotels in Makati was filled with men wearing suits and ties, women dressed in beautiful and expensive gowns, sipping their favorite cocktails as they chatted in small groups, while soft music played in the background.

In the middle of the gathering, Richard Lim was commanding attention, not only because of his good looks and the confident way he carries himself, but because this was the first time, he was out in a social setting since he left the country more than two years ago, and after the death of his father. People were very curious about the new CEO of Lim Corporation. Added to that, a beautiful girl, wearing a simple, but very elegant royal blue chiffon gown, was with him, and they looked so good together. They also looked very much in love. People noticed it in the way they gazed at each other, sought each other out when they got separated, and the little touches they exchanged when they thought people were not looking.

Richard was reluctant to go to this event. However, Lisa told him that the award that they were supposed to receive from the organization who gives this annual recognition is one of the most prestigious in the business. The winners were pre-selected, and the organization just holds an awarding ceremony, then a party for the winners. His executive assistant also added that it wouldn’t hurt for the new CEO of the LC to be seen in a very important and well-attended event like this. He asked Maya to go with him. He wanted her to share this moment with him. This was also their first outing into society since they became a couple two weeks ago.

It had been a wonderful two weeks for Maya and Richard as they expressed their feelings for each other after clearing the air in the rooftop garden. They ended up staying there the whole afternoon, just being with each other, and making up for lost moments. They told their respective offices that they will just go on leave the rest of the afternoon. When they got down from the rooftop garden, Marissa knew that her boss and the beautiful and well-liked head of their foundation are now a couple. The whole company noticed the change in their status the following days. The employees were happy that their boss has found love, and to such a lovely person as Maya Dela Rosa. Richard also introduced Maya to his mother. Mrs. Lim and Maya took an instant liking to each other. It turned out also that Mama Esme, as she wanted to be called by Maya, knew Maya’s dad and mom. They met each other in some embassy function in Beijing many years ago. Richard and Maya spent all their free time together. Sometimes in the roof garden for lunch, and the evenings, having dinner in the restaurants that struck their fancy, or at Maya’s family home, where she cooked for him. Richard couldn’t be happier. Maya felt she is the luckiest girl in the world as Richard is the sweetest boyfriend.

“Sweetheart, are you okay? Hindi ka ba bored?” Richard whispered to Maya when they got a respite from all the business associates, and friends of Sir Roberto saying hello to Richard, and those who approached them because they were curious about Maya. “This event sometimes last for hours. See, it is not even starting!”

“Don’t worry about me Ricky. I’m okay. I attend charity events for the foundation, and those too, sometimes went on for hours. I also accompanied my dad before to functions when mom was not around or didn’t want to go , so I got used to to this kind of thing.” Maya assured Richard as she holds on to his arm.

“Thank you, sweetheart. Have I told you that you looked so beautiful tonight and that I am the envy of all the guys here?” Richard told Maya as he gazed lovingly at her. “I can’t even leave your side for so long, someone might snatch you right under my nose.”

“Naku, Mr. Lim, I can’t count na nga how many times you told me that this evening. Pero, thank you pa rin. Saka, kilig pa rin kaya ako every time you say  that.” Maya smiled sweetly at Richard, then affectionately rubbed his arm.

They private moment was interrupted by someone who suddenly went too close to Richard and tried to kiss him on the lips. Good thing he got good reflexes, Richard thought. He managed to sidestep the kiss, and it landed on his cheek.

“Richard, darling, how are you? It has been a while.” The lady wearing a low-cut gown that showed a lot of skin, said to Richard in a smoky voice. “Let’s hang out soon.”

“Hi Josephine.” Richard said cooly. “I didn’t know that your father’s company is also one of the awardees.”

“Our company is on the committee this year. When I saw in the list that LC is going to be one of the awardees, I made an effort to come, for you. “Josephine said flirtingly. “You are bad ha, for not been returning my calls and your witch of a secretary always told me you were unavailable when I go to LC.”

Richard ignored her flirty censure that sounded like they had something going, then put his hand on Maya’s back, pulled her closer to him, and introduced her to Josephine.

“Josephine, please meet my lovely girlfriend, Maya dela Rosa.” He said proudly. “Maya, sweetheart, this is Josephine del Rosario of RDR Group of Companies. “Her dad Ramon was a friend of Papa.”

Maya knew the moment Richard uttered the name “Josephine” that this was the girl that his father wanted him to marry.

“Nice to meet you Josephine!” She said with a polite smile.

Josephine looked at Maya from head to foot, then smiled cooly, as if she is dismissing her as nobody worth of her time and attention. Maya also felt the hostility coming from Josephine. But she decided to let it pass , and keep her cool.  When Josephine noticed Richard was not really reacting to what she was saying and that his attention was just focused on the girl beside him, she left in a huff.

Soon after the awards ceremony started and they went back to their table. Lisa was there and several other officers of LC. True to Richard’s prediction, the event lasted long, having started late. But with Maya beside him, he didn’t feel bored or didn’t notice the passing of the hours. They whispered at each other from time to time and held hands under the table.

Maya was waiting for Richard, who got cornered by one of his father’s longtime friend, at the lounge of the hotel, when she heard Josephine’s smoky voice and another girl’s. She looked at them from her peripheral vision.

“Josephine girl, have you seen Richard Lim’s girlfriend? She is very lovely ha. I also heard that she is the daughter of our ambassador to Spain.” The girl said conversationally. “Nagkakilala raw sila sa Sweden, from what I heard.”

“What, lovely???  She looks ordinary to me. And I am not interested in her background and the circumstances of their meeting each other. I wonder how long will she last as Richard’s girlfriend? You’ve heard of him before and I know him. I don’t think he is really into her. Besides, girlfriend, Richard is mine and di ba, we almost got married two years ago! He just decided to go abroad because of his feud with Tito Roberto.” Josephine stressed to the other girl. “That Maya Dela Rosa  is no competition to me! Watch out, the next time you read the society colums, you will read about my engagement to Richard!”

Maybe, it was the lateness of the hour, or she just genuinely dislikes that spoiled brat, but Maya had enough of the rude girl and her lies. She approached Josephine and her friend calmly. I have to hold on to my temper, she mused, think of Ricky!

“Excuse me, hi Josephine, and hello to you too, Ms…..” She said. “I’m Maya Dela Rosa.”

“Hi, I’m Mayen Carlos!” The other girl said and gave Maya a tentative smile, recognizing her as the girl with Richard Lim. “And you are Richard Lim’s girlfriend he had been proudly introducing around earlier. That was sweet of him.”

“Girlfriend! Not for long!” Josephine said cattily, ignoring Maya.

“If I may speak Josephine, sorry I can’t help, but heard what you two were talking about, as your voice was quite  loud. Pardon for this, Mayen.” Maya said politely and apologetically to the other girl. “Josephine, please respect the fact that Richard is in a relationship and the lucky girl is me. It is not you or any of the girls who ran after him before he left for abroad. You can’t force love the way you have done. Yes, he had told me about you. And yes, we are perfectly happy and very much in love. And please don’t spread lies about my boyfriend. Thank you! Nice to meet you Mayen. I just wish it was in a better setting.” She added for Mayen.

Maya made her exit after saying her piece. She didn’t really want to get into a cat fight with the girl who was after her man. Besides, on hindsight, she should have just ignored her. She would have, if Josephine was not rude and mean. She left Josephine getting red in the face.

Richard heard what Maya said and asked her when they were in the car. Good thing, they have decided to ask Mang Lem, the Lim family driver to drive them to this event. It ended to be much better. Now they can sit together, chat and cuddle in the back seat.

“What was that all about with Josephine, sweetheart.” He asked, though, based on what he heard, he have a pretty good idea.

“Naku, never mind Ricky. I should have not said anything to that Josephine.” Maya said, sighing. “She just got on my nerves with the stuffs she was saying about you.”

“Hmmm, kaya pala you were starting to look fierce, sweetheart. Just ignore her.” Richard said as he settled Maya comfortably in his arms and teased. “Inggit lang iyon sa iyon kasi your boyfriend is handsome, na kahit marathon na yata ang ginawa niyang paghahabol di niya nakuha! Saka, I heard yata na you told her you are the lucky girl I chose!”

“Yabang mo, sweetheart.” Maya jested and lovingly pinched him on the side. “Swerte ka rin sa akin ah. Imagine, kahit sa kabilang panig ng mundo, nabighani ka.”

“Yes naman sweetheart, I am the luckiest guy in the world. Besides there is only one girl I see, since I met that lovely girl in Sweden. I will hold on to her and never let her go.” Richard then kissed Maya on the forehead and hugged her tight. They settled more comfortably in the car for the trip to Antipolo where Maya lives, with her old nanny, Manang Fe and another househelp, Sabel, since her parents are in Europe.

“Maya, sweetheart, we are here.” Richard said as he tried to wake up a sleeping Maya.

“Ricky, I just want to stay here” She said as she burrowed deeper into Richard’s embrace.

It took several more minutes before Richard managed to wake up Maya. He accompanied her inside. She opened the door, Manang Fe and Sabel, having gone to sleep. Maya asked if Ricky wants a cup of coffee before he goes back to Makati where he lives.

“Thank you, sweetheart, but I better head home. Saka para you can rest na also.” Richard said as he brought Maya to the foot of the stairs. “Go up na please, and I will just lock after me.”

Maya nodded, kissed Richard on the lips and started going up the stairs of the dimly-lit house, when she realized something. She was hesitant, but decided anyway to ask him.

“Errr, Ricky, before you you. I need a favor.” She said, getting red in the face a little bit. “Can you help me unbutton the top buttons of my gown. I can’t do it. I don’t want to wake up Manang and Sabel, anymore. Sabel was actually the one who helped me earlier.”

Richard smiled and assured Maya it is okay. Maya stood on the steps with her back to Richard, who started unbuttoning Maya’s gown. The more skin that got exposed, the harder for Richard to breath. He didn’t realize Maya’s effect on him and her innocent request. He can’t move promptly after undoing the buttons. He needed to collect himself.

“Ricky, sweetheart, are you done? I think I can manage undoing the rest.”  Maya said as she turned to face Richard and caught the longing and the desire on his face. It triggered something in her. She touched his face and whispered softly, “Ricky”.

Richard looked at Maya and his control snapped. He started kissing her. It started as a simple meeting of their lips, but it progressed to much more. They kissed hotly, passionately and he started caressing Maya’s exposed back. Maya was also caressing Richard’s back and they were as close as two person could be. They were so at it, that they didn’t notice the lights going up. Until the sound of someone clearing her throat penetrated their private world.

“Ehhmmm, Maya hija, and Richard, good evening.”  Manang Fe greeted the two with a poker face. “Ginabi na kayo ah.”

Richard and Maya broke apart, with Richard trying to cover Maya’s exposed back by putting her infront of him.

“Good evening po, Manang Fe.” Richard said respectfully. He liked Manang Fe and the past several times he had been here, she acted like a mom to Maya and made him felt at home also. Maya told him that she is like a mom to her since her parents were either abroad or quite busy.

“Hi Manang.” Maya said, blushing. “Gising pa po pala kayo?”

“Kukuha sana ako ng maiinom. Bigla akong nauhaw, eh. Saka, titingnan ko rin sana kung nakauwi ka na. Alam mo namang hindi ako mapakali, kahit alam kung okay ka naman, kapag ginagabi ka.” Manang said, looking closely at the two, but didn’t say anything anymore. “O sige, maiwan ko na kayo. Good night, Richard, ingat sa pag-uwi.”

“Thank you po, Manang Fe, paalis na rin po ako.” Richard said.

They waited until Manang Fe was out of sight before they moved from where they were. They looked at each other and smiled sheepishly.

“Naku, baka i-ban na ako ni Manang dito.” Richard said while smiling at Maya. “Ikaw kasi eh.”

“Ha, bakit ako, ikaw yata ang nagsimula ng lahat.” Maya good-naturedly bantered. “Para, I was asking you lang to unbutton my gown.”

“Maya sweetheart, you don’t know your effect on me.” Richard said lovingly, then affectionately kissed her on the nose. “But I better get going, baka nga tuluyan na akong i-ban ni Manang. Good night, I love you very much.”

“I love you too, sweetheart. Take care and text me when you get home.” Maya said and hugged Richard.

They kissed goodbye, and it took two more kisses before they let go of each other that evening. Maya and Richard both went to bed smiling, remembering the perfect ending to their evening.

Note: My apologies for the delayed update. Got busy in the real world. I needed to catch up on two days of sleep yesterday! Anyways, I hope you liked the continuation of SL. Have a nice evening, or morning! 🙂

Suddenly Love – Chapter 6

Chapter 6
Heart to heart

Maya saw Richard right away when she got to the top. He was sitting on one of the rattan chairs in the gazebo. He didn’t notice that she was there. He was just staring into space and unconsciously tapping his fingers on the glass table, his coffee, untouched.

“Ricky.” Maya called softly.

“Maya!” Richard said, very surprised to see her standing at the entrance of the garden. He smiled brightly, especially when he realized that Maya called him “Ricky” and not “Sir”! He is so happy at the moment. At last, he will have his chance to explain himself and apologize to Maya.

Richard stood up, went to Maya, hold her on the elbow and guided her to the chair beside his. He asked her what would like to drink. Only then that Maya noticed her surroundings. Her heart was beating so loudly that she felt dizzy for a moment. The whole place is really beautiful, and looks so peaceful. There is also a small bar in one corner of the garden.

“No, thank you, Ricky.” She replied. “This is really a beautiful place. It looks so peaceful with all the flowers in bloom, and the plants. I didn’t know that there is a garden here, on top of our building.” She continued conversationally to calm her nerves.

“Not many people have been here. My mother had it built for Papa. He liked to garden during his leisure time. Mama thought it would be a stress reliever for him to come up here from time to time. Even if he can’t garden here!” Richard said by way of explanation. He too, felt the need to chatter, to steady his fast beating heart. He was unsure if he will start the conversation on the issue hanging between them. He opted to wait for Maya to say something.

“Ricky, thank you for the flowers. Ang dami ah. Also for the framed photo yesterday, and the coffee and muffin.” Maya said as she looked intently at Ricky’s handsome face.

“Maya, about the notes, I meant every word I have written.” He replied.

“R-ricky.” Maya said, then she asked him the question that has been in her head since he ‘disappeared’ from her life in Stockholm. “Why did you leave without even saying goodbye? I mean, you are free to come and go, wala naman talaga tayong commitment, but didn’t I deserve a goodbye, even as a friend? Then added to that, you didn’t tell me you are connected to Lim Corporation, or that you are one of the Lims of LC!”

“W-what?” Ricky exclaimed, surprised at Maya asking why he didn’t say goodbye. “Maya I left you a note, explaining that I had a family emergency. I left it at the front desk of your hotel! Didn’t they give it to you?”

“You, did? Wala naman silang ibinigay sa akin! I waited for you at the lobby the following evening, pero nang hindi ka dumating, I got worried. I called your phone pero out of reach siya. Nahiya naman akong tumawag kay Rafi , and hanapin ka. The following day, I waited for you again, pero wala pa rin. Then the third night as well, and that was when I realized then that you were gone. I will admit, nasaktan ako ng sobra, kasi I thought we were okay. We were more than okay when we parted after our trip to the botanical garden.” Maya said as she looked at Ricky, getting teary-eyed.

“Maya, sweetheart, please don’t cry. I can’t take that. I’m so sorry for everything – for the miscommunication, for not saying to you my connection to LC! You don’t know how sorry I was for not admitting to you my connection to the company you work for. I was planning to come clean that Monday evening where we were supposed to see each other again. After our trip to the botanical garden, it was very important for me do so. I didn’t want a lie between us. I believed we have started something beautiful. I was hoping then that you also felt the same feeling I was feeling after the kiss we shared. But I should have not left the telling to another day, as something very urgent came up the following day. I needed to take an urgent trip to the Philippines. I tried calling you, pero you were not answering. I guessed you turned off your phone during training, kaya there was that note I left. Let me explain fully, please.” Richard appealed as he held both of Maya’s hands.

Maya looked at him and nodded.

Richard took a deep breath, then looking deeply into Maya’s eyes, started his explanation.

“I think I better start from the beginning. My father sent me to Harvard. He wanted me to learn everything I could about running a business. He wanted to groom me as his successor. I returned to the Philippines full of ideas, and very eager to implement all I have learned in my studies in America. I wanted to be with him in making our company grow more. However, the reality was far from my idealistic take on things. Yes, my father gave me a key management position which suited my qualifications. But most of my ‘modern ideas’, he disgreed with. I will take a step forward and then he will send me two steps backward. He didn’t have enough confidence in me. He was just too traditional when it comes to business. Yet I persevered, thinking that he was just slow to change, being old school, but it didn’t change as months and years passed by. I love the company, our employees, and I love my father too, and my mother, so I stayed, even if there were times, I wanted to quit. However, things  came to a head when he insisted that I marry one of his business partner’s daughter. I had enough of him not trusting me to make my own decision, prove my worth, and help in the running of the company. He wanted to manage my personal life too, saddle me with a girl I didn’t love, that I didn’t even like!

I submitted my letter of resignation and I told him I accepted a job in England. He told me that I can’t expect any support from him. I said I can manage. I said sorry to him then packed my bags and moved to London. I cut ties with LC and went on my own. It was a nice feeling also to be just ‘Ricky Lim’, not ‘Richard Lim’ of Lim Corporation. I was just a bit sad at how my father and I parted. It made Mama sad too.

Two months ago, my Uncle Patrick, my father’s brother who was on the board of LC, started appealing to me to come back to the company. He said my father was sick. He said my father regretted our discord, but too proud to ask me himself, to come back. He said he was doing the asking on his own volition and that my father didn’t know about his calls to me. I put him off. I was not ready to come back, for fear that when my father gets well, he will be back to his old ways. I made a life where I was. Just before I came to Sweden, Uncle Patrick called me again. I told him I will think about it. I decided to take some time off,  see what Rafi has to say about the whole thing.

Then, there was you. I never expected I would fall in love, so sudden, so fast, when I took that trip to Sweden. I was not really looking for love, the way things were. But from the moment I have seen you at the airport, I was attracted to you. Then, fate has thrown us together several times. The more I got to know you, the more, I fell deeper. I regretted not telling you about me and LC right away. But at the time you told me where you work, I just wanted to forget all my problems, my situation. I also wanted you to know me as me, and not because I am your boss’ son. I also didn’t know what you have heard about ‘Richard Lim’. When I got to know you better, I have decided that I will tell you the truth, and was just looking for an opportunity to do so. After our trip to the botanical garden, and I realized that I have fallen for you, I have decided to tell you the following night, and ask for your forgiveness. I hope that you can also see beyond that, and consider we had so far, together. I love you with all my heart, Maya. I didn’t intend to hurt you or leave you like that.

“Ricky.” It was all Maya can say, as she tried to reassure Richard that she understood. “What happened?”

“The following morning, Rafi and I got a call from Mama. She asked us to come home as Papa was terminally ill. He had cancer. We didn’t even know he was that sick! He didn’t want us to know and worry. Mama said that Papa wanted to talk to me urgently. We readily booked the earliest available flight that day. When I failed to reach you, I decided to leave a note for you at your hotel on the way to the airport. In it, I told you that Rafi and I were going back to Manila and that I will see you there when you return from your training. I also mentioned that I have something to tell you and that I want to tell it to you in person. I also wrote my parents’ address and phone number in the note.”

“Ricky, I wished I have known the situation you were in. I don’t know what happened to your note! I never thought it could be like that. Kaya pala, Sir Roberto was very sickly the past several months. I liked yout father, even if he was strict. He was very sincere in helping people. I was sad to hear of his passing.” Maya touched Richard’s face. “I wished I was able to comfort you.”

“You did, Maya, in a way.” Richard said and then elaborated. “The thought of you and our time together gave me strength, and comforted me as I went through the whole gamut of emotions  – from guilt in not listening to my uncle, and not patching things up with my father, sadness at his passing, and regret at all the wasted time – time that I could have spent with him, instead of working abroad. But then, I also took comfort in the fact that our paths crossed because of me going abroad. Though, had I not left, I think we will also meet at some point and ended up liking each other.

“When Rafi and I arrived home, I could see how happy Papa was to see us, especially me. He asked if he could talk to me alone. And when we did, he said sorry to me for not listening to my ideas, not giving me the room to grow, and forcing someone I didn’t like to me. He told me he should have not done that. He said, he should have known better since he and my mom were a love match. What my dad didn’t know was that – Josephine was the one pushing her father to talk to my father about us marrying. She have been coming on to me quite strongly prior to that, but I just ignored her.

Papa and I talked long into the night. I told him about you. He was very happy to know that we have met. He liked you. He also said that when got to know you, he thought that if he can wish someone especial for me, it is you. He said his only regret is that he will not see us together. I told him to concentrate on getting well as I will not stop until you are my girlfriend, then we can all have dinner, and I will introduce you to him and Mama as my love.

He died in his sleep the day after that, Maya.” Richard said, his voice breaking. “It was so hard in the beginning, but I have accepted that he is with God now, free from pain that he had been feeling the past several months. Mama said Papa really changed and mellowed after I left the country and he regretted what happened between us. I really wished I had more time with him. I also came to realized, then, that life could be gone in a snap so we should savor all the moments we can with our loved ones. Tell them how we feel, and don’t waste time.”

Maya didn’t notice that there were tears in her eyes until Richard wiped it with his thumb. She hugged Richard tight to comfort him and whispered. “ I love you  Ricky.” Maya realized too that life is too short to dwell on things that had already happened and that she can’t do anything about. She and Richard have both learned something from what happened. What’s important is now. Love is stronger and more enduring. They are just starting, but she want to nurture and make their love grow more and more each day they are together.

“Maya, I love you very much. Promise, I will make it up to you. I will never leave you again, and thank you, for forgiving me!” Richard said with so much loved. He cupped her face and kissed her with all the love he feels. Maya responded to Richard’s kiss, wanting to show him how much she loves him too. The rooftop garden became the perfect backdrop for their expression of love for each other.

Suddenly Love – Chapter 5

Chapter 5
Love among the blooms

Richard was still smiling when he pressed the intercom to call his secretary. At least, a glimmer of hope from Maya, he thought. Now on to his next move, to make her say yes 100 percent to talking to him, and hearing him out.

“Yes, Sir Richard.” Marissa said, noticing that her boss is in a very good mood.

“Marissa, please call the florist we use and order these.” Richard said as he handed Marissa a piece of paper, with some instructions in it. “Please be here early tomorrow for the delivery and supervise the crew that will go to Maya’s office.”

“Oh, wow!” It was all Marissa could say, her eyes round as saucers when she read the list her boss gave her. Then she smiled at Richard. “Consider this done, Sir. Ako na ang bahala.”

“By the way, include this also.” He handed her another small envelope. “Thank you, Marissa.”

“Okay, Sir. No problem.” She smiled at him and felt kilig also at the latest development in the love story between her boss and his lady love.

Richard went home that evening in high spirits. He knew he still needed to explain himself well to Maya, but he is getting more and more optimistic that she will hear him out.

Maya also felt happy when she arrived home that evening. Remembering their times in Sweden made her happier, even if she felt very sad and hurt the rest of her stay there because she missed Richard, and was puzzled that he just, sort of, disappeared from her life. She thought of asking Rafi , but pride and reserve prevailed. Now, she is getting more and more open to the idea of giving Richard the benefit of the doubt. Maybe, he did have a very valid reason for just leaving like that, or for not disclosing his connection to Lim Corporation, she mused.

In the short time that Maya had known Richard, she discovered that he was a gentleman, a very caring person, very straightforward, a fun friend, and he really listened to what she was saying, even if sometimes, it was just something silly. She also liked his sense of humor. Besides in all the years of working everywhere and meeting a lot of people, Maya considered herself a pretty good judge of character, and from the onset, she didn’t see or felt anything negative about Ricky.  She felt very comfortable with him, as if they have known each other a long time. She didn’t feel that he was stringing her along. In fact, except for the LC issue, he had been very candid with her. Judging by what Rafi said, it seemed that he was not that open to other people at all.

Maya’s introspection was interrupted by the beeping of her mobile phone.

                                            Good night, Maya. Sweet dreams.

Looking forward to seeing you again.

I hope it will be 100% tomorrow. 😉

                                            – Ricky

His message made Maya smiled. She can’t resist replying.

                                            You wish! 🙂

She went to bed smiling, and quite happy. Richard, on the other hand, had an even bigger smile when he went to sleep.

Maya woke up with a feeling of anticipation. Ricky was the same. They both went to work early.

This time they met each other at the coffee shop at the ground floor of the building.

“Good morning Maya.” Richard greeted Maya with a big sunny smile. Then, he automatically ordered her favorite brew from the barista. “Miss, one tall americano for her please.”

“Oh, you don’t have to, Sir.” Maya protested.

“I insist, please. Just say, thank you Ricky.” Richard asserted.

Thank you, Sir Richard.” She stressed, just can’t resist saying it, tongue-in-cheek.

The two of them walked towards the elevator. Richard pressed the elevator button going up, and gestured to Maya to enter first. They sipped their coffee silently, comfortably, taking sidelong glances at each other, staring but not really looking at the changing numbers on the elevator panel, until they reached the highest floor.

“i’ll go ahead, Sir.” Maya said to Richard and then rushed to her office.

When she reached her section, she found some of her staff looking at something from her opened office door. When they parted to allow her to pass, she was astonished! Her office was transformed into a flower shop, with sunflowers, roses, tulips, and other blooms she can’t readily name, in vases on all the available surface!

“Minerva, who gave me these flowers?” She asked when she recovered a little bit, though, she knew the answer to it.

“Ms. Maya, pagdating po namin ni Emman, nandiyan na ang mga iyan.” She replied.

“Naku, Sis, bonggang-bongga naman ang admirer mo ah. Parang alam ko na kung sino.” Emman looked at Maya and smiled.

Maya just smiled, then told Emman and Minerva, also the other curious employees, to go back to their cubicles. Then she looked for a card. She found the small card at the center of her desk. She opened it, had no inkling that the message would be earthshaking.

                                Dearest Maya,

Every time I see flowers, I got reminded of our

                                trip to the botanical garden.

It was a day etched not only in my memory, but in my heart.

It was the day I realized I’ve fallen in love with you.

                               Love,

                              Ricky

“Oh Ricky.” Maya said, putting all her feelings in those words, then muttered to herself. “Hindi lang ikaw, Ricky, hindi lang ikaw. I also realized I have fallen for you hard on that day!” She can’t help but remember her last day with Richard, and the turning point in their relationship.

While Maya was holding the card, trying to absorb what Richard said, and taking another trip down memory lane, Richard can’t keep still in his office. He is wondering how Maya is reacting on his latest and biggest move to patch things up with her. But he thought, oh well, the die has been cast. “I just need to wait on how she would take this.” He needed to relax and there is one place where he can try to do that. He informed his secretary where he would be, and told her the only instance when he can be disturbed there. When he reached the rooftop garden, he sat on one of the rattan chairs there, and thought of the last day he was with Maya in Stockholm.

One fine Sunday

The ringing of her mobile phone woke Maya. She was startled, not use to someone calling her in Sweden. During training hours, her phoned is even turned off. She looked at the screen and smiled.

“Hi Ricky, good morning. Ang aga mong nagising ah. Considering na whole day tayo kahapon na naglakwatsa.” She greeted Richard happily.

“Rise and shine, Maya! I have a treat for you. Get ready!” He replied, excitement evident in his voice. “Hurry up, please.”

“Wait, teka, teka. Saan tayo pupunta at nasaan ka ba?” She asked while trying to shake off the remnants of sleep from her system. “Did we agree to meet today?”

“ No, we didn’t. But it is a nice day for the trip I have in mind. You will like it, I promise.” Richard cajoled Maya. “I’m here at the lobby. I also have a steaming cup of coffee for you.”

“Okay, okay. Mabuti I was not planning to do anything today, except sleep in, and go out nga rin later.” Maya said, happy that she will be spending another day with Richard. She does not know how long he intended to stay in Sweden. He replied vaguely when she asked.

One hour later, Maya and Richard were inside Bergius Botanic Garden. Just like the previous day, Maya’s senses went on overddrive, this time on the over abundance of beautiful flowers, and plants from all over that she can see. She noticed familiar ones too.

“Wow, this so wonderful! Thank you Ricky.” Maya was so happy, that she forgot herself, and hugged Ricky tight. Then she realized what she did, and blushed.

Richard smiled at her, a smile that lit up his whole face and made his chinito eyes disappeared into a thin line. He gazed at her intently, and meaningfully. He  actually felt his heart jumped when Maya hugged him. “I know how you love flowers. Di ba you told me your favorite pa nga are sunflowers. Come let’s tour the place. Tapos, we will have lunch at The Old Orangery. The place serves meals from locally and ecologically produced products daw, sabi sa site nila.”

They did that, then toured the rest of the place. When they got tired, they went to the cafe inside the Edvard Anderson Conservatory. The view was wonderful  and very relaxing as they sipped their steaming cups of coffee. From the cafe, they can also see all the plants of the greenhouse closely. Everything is beautiful, they both thought, not only because of the beauty around them, but because of the company. They chatted, sipped coffee,  sometimes, they would find themselves gazing each other, then smiling for no apparent reason, other than they are so happy to be in each other’s company.

“Ricky, thank you again for this wonderful treat.” Maya said, so happy with the way her Sunday turned out.

“Basta, ikaw Maya. Anything for you, anything to make you happy. Seeing you this happy is also making me happy.” He said simply.

They left the botanic garden around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. By that time, it was drizzling. Richard wanted to wait until the rain stops. Maya said they should just go for it, anyway it was just light rain, so they can catch their bus. Richard said, they can just take a taxi afterwards. Maya said the bus is coming so there is no need for that. She grab Richard’s hand and started to pull him towards the direction of the bus stop. Ricky stopped her and intertwined their hands. At first, Maya was surprised, but liked the feeling of it, felt kilig, she looked at their interwined hands, and smiled at Ricky. They half-jogged in the rain, which turned from drizzle to downpour in a matter of minutes. They ended up missing their bus. Maya and Richard stopped at a bridge after a while, laughing and very wet, trying to catch their breaths. Maya’s hair was plastered all over her face, and water was dripping on Ricky’s face.

“Maya, let me.” Richard said as he parted Maya’s hair from her face, tucked the strands behind her ears. Then proceeded to wipe the water from her face with his hand.

While Richard was doing that, Maya was gazing at him intently. Their eyes met, and both felt very strong emotions then, before they can stop themselves, their lips met into a bone-melting kiss, unmindful of the rain, or the people passing by. They were in a world of their own. They slowly parted after a while, looked at each with huge, loving smiles.

“Maya, I’m not sorry I kissed you.” Richard said as he continue caressing her face.

Maya blushed and gave Richard a loving smile. “Let’s go na nga.”

They ended up taking a taxi. They were very much conscious of each other and the remembrance of their kiss in the rain. There were times, they just looked at each other lovingly. Their hands were still firmly intertwined. Even without verbal declarations of love, they know their relationship shifted to another level. Both were on cloud nine when they parted that night, and were looking forward to seeing each other the following evening.

Maya read Richard’s note again, and smiled. She made a decision then. She will hear him out. She realized that something so beautiful, so wonderful, that had happened to them, should be nurtured and worth the risk, worth everything, despite the fact that after that beautiful Sunday, Ricky didn’t show up at her hotel lobby, anymore.

She went to Richard’s office.

“Hi Marissa. Is Mr. Lim, free? May I see him?” She asked his secretary.

“Hi Ms. Maya, he is at the rooftop garden. He told me to send you there, if you come looking for him.” Marissa said and gave Maya directions.

Maya went up. She didn’t even know that their building has a rooftop garden. But judging by where she was, she realized that the garden is a private one. She is very nervous, but at the same time, has a good feeling on the outcome of this talk with Richard. Her love for him eclipses all the sad and hurt feelings she felt when he left. Knowing that he also loves her is giving her strength to move towards him, be with him again.

Suddenly Love – Chapter 4

Chapter 4
Laws of attraction

Maya arrived early the following morning. At last, her jet lag is gone. Even, if it took her a while to fall asleep last night, because of Richard and his thoughtful gesture that day. She had been thinking, geting tempted actually, of talking to him, so that she would know what really happened, and why did he not tell her that he is connected to Lim Corporation, and move on from there.  She just need to get over her hurt feelings first. Let’s see, I will take it one day at time, Maya told herself.

Maya was not the only one early that morning.

“Good morning, Maya!” Richard greeted her with his usual lopsided smile when she entered the elevator. She was startled as she didn’t expect Richard to be sharing elevators with the employees. When Sir Roberto was the CEO, he only used the elevator reserved for him.

“Good morning, Sir.” She said politely. She then chatted with his EA, Lisa who was sharing the elevator with them. She remembered Lisa’s little niece. “Kumusta na ang niece mo, Lisa? Is she still taking ballet lessons?”

“Okay naman siya Ms. Maya. She is enjoying her lessons. The school you recommended is great!” Lisa replied, at the same time, noticing her boss gazing at Maya. Hmmm, she thought, something is really going on between these two. “Thank you ulit for the help.”

Maya and Lisa chatted about general stuffs, until they reached their floor.

“See you, Lisa. Sir, I will go ahead.” Then she was off like a bolt of lightning to her office.

Richard just gazed at Maya’s departing figure. He can wait, he mused. She did tell him before that she can’t stay mad long with someone she was annoyed with. Madali raw mawala ang galit niya. Richard rememebered they were talking then about her cousin who borrowed car without permission when she needed to go somewhere important. He hopes, it is the same, in his case, that her anger will subside, for them to talk, him to be forgiven, and patch things up.

Maya was greeted by her secretary with a big smile when she reached the section occupied by the foundation. She was a bit puzzled, but thought that Minerva may just be happy about something. Then, she saw it right away when she opened her office door, a brown box with beautiful purple and yellow ribbons. She pressed her intercom.

“Yes, Ms. Maya.” Minerva said when she picked up.

“Minerva, kanino galing itong box?” Maya asked, though she had an inkling on who it was from.

“Dinala po kanina nung secretary ni Mr. Lim, Ms. Maya. I put it on your table na lang, para pagpasok mo, makita mo agad.” Minerva explained. She was also getting curious why Mr. Lim’s secretary’s trips to their office are getting more frequent, with something to give to her boss. But she dared not ask. It is her boss’s business. She will wait until she mentions something.

“Oh, okay. Thanks a lot.” Maya said as she settled down to her seat, and started unraveling the ribbons with trepidation. What she saw made her teary-eyed. She lifted the framed photo from the crumpled layers of japanese paper that protected it, and touched it lovingly. There was a small card with it, but she will read it later. Ah the memories with this photo, she thought.

Richard, at his, office was also remembering the memories associated with the photo he sent Maya. He hopes that by making her remember their good times together, it would be easier to forgive his lie by omission.

Perfect days

Since the trip to Gamla stan, and with the exception of the night the institute gave a welcome party for the course participants, Maya’s evenings following that, were spent with Richard. They had dinner in some of the popular and interesting restaurants in Stockholm. After dinner, they usually go for a walk, chatting, getting to know each other more and more. The more Maya knows about Ricky, the more she likes him a lot. He waited for her at the lobby of her hotel every evening. When she sees him there, waiting patiently, her heart beats faster and there is an unexplained happiness in her being. Some of her colleagues noticed, and even asked if he is her boyfriend. She clarified that he is just a friend and a fellow Filipino. They were surprised, and when she asked why, they told her that he looked like he is in love with her, and it was the way he was spending most of his evenings with her.

“Maya, what is you plan this Friday night?” Richard asked as they walked around the shopping district.

“Hmmm, wala naman. Some of my fellow participants want to go out for drinks and unwind a bit. But I am not sure yet if I will go.” Maya replied as she checked the display at an H&M window. “Bakit?”

“Well, I will invite you sana to dinner with my sister Rafi, and her family.” Richard said, hoping Maya will agree. Rafi wants to meet her also. He told her about Maya when she got curious why he was always going out in the evening when he didn’t know anyone in Stockholm. Rafi must have heard something when he talked about Maya for she looked at her with so much happiness and teased him that she would like to meet the girl that finally made her brother’s heart beats faster and that is making him to act out of character. “If that is okay with you. But I guarantee you, you will like my sister, and my makulit na pamangkin. Rafi’s husband is also very nice.”

“Hmmmm, okay. Sure, this is okay? Baka it is a family dinner. Ikaw nga, parati mo na akong sinasamahan, when you are supposed to visit your sister on this trip.” Maya said, though, she feel a bit nervous about meeting Richard’s sister and at the same time, feels happy that he will introduce her to a family member.

Richard have told Maya a bit about his sister. That she have been living in Sweden since she got married to Magnus, a Swede, who works for the foreign ministry. They met each other in the Philippines, while Rafi was working as a visa officer in the Embassy of Sweden in Manila. They got married in the Philippines on the request of their parents, but she moved here soon after. Richard also mentioned that aside from her being his sister, she is also his bestfriend. They have been very closed since they were kids, having born only a year apart. Now, aside from being a stay at home wife, Rafi writes children’s books. She also does some translation work, being fluent in several languages.

Richard was waiting at the usual place in the lobby of Maya’s hotel, Friday evening. Maya came down several minutes after he arrived.

“Ricky, hi. Let’s go.” She greeted him warmly.

He looked, and caught his breath. She is so beautiful. Maya is wearing a violet dress that reached a little below her knees, with lace overlay and cinched by a ribbon-shaped belt. She had minimal make-up on.

“Maya, you look lovely.” Richard said admiringly.

“Okay lang ba this one, for the dinner?” Maya asked uncertainly.

“Yes, yes, you are very fine.” Richard assured her. He was dressed in a light blue shirt,  dark pants and a coat, and he looked very handsome. She noticed that he was getting second looks from the ladies who passed by the lobby to dine at the nearby hotel restaurant.

Maya had a wonderful time with Richard’s sister and her family. Rafi was very easy to get along with, so was her husband. Philippa is a joy, looks like a doll, and full of questions. Richard was very solicitous, always asking her if she is okay, asked her if there is something else she wants, and told her that she should feel at home. She felt so cherished. A fact that didn’t escape Rafi.

“Maya, what did you do to my brother?” She asked while Maya is helping her load the dishwasher. Rafi initially refused, but Maya insisted, and anyway, Magnus wanted to consult Richard on an investment he would like to make. They went to his office, so Maya went with Rafi to the kitchen.

“Ha, what do you mean Rafi?” Maya was surprised at the question.

“I haven’t seen him this way, so caring, so loving!” Rafi remarked. “In fact, you are the first girl he introduced to me.”

“Really! But your brother and I are just friends. In fact, ilang araw pa lang kaming magkakilala, though, parang ang feeling ko ang tagal na.” Maya explained at the same time, felt her heart jumped with Rafi’s revelation.

“Hindi halata, Maya. Pero, whatever it is, hindi na ako magtatanong kasi baka Ricky will be mad at me na for being kulit to you. But I am so glad he had met you.” Rafi added, then hugged Maya. “ I hope the two of you will be together, no matter what.” She added cryptically. She knew her brother didn’t tell Maya about his connection to Lim Corporation. She was against him not telling her, but Ricky appealed to her, promised to her, that he will tell Maya soon.

Maya thanked Rafi and Magnus for having her for dinner. She and Ricky left the Erikssons’ place around 11PM. They walked back to the hotel. She thanked Ricky for another wonderful evening. They agreed to meet early the following day, being a Saturday, to go to Skansen, the open-air museum that was in Maya’s list of places to see in Stockholm.

The following morning, Maya was up early for the trip to Skansen. Ricky also brought Maya a cup of coffee when he picked her up. Maya loved Ricky’s thoughtfulness.

When they arrived at Skansen, the sights, sounds, and the interesting things she can see overwhelmed Maya’s senses. According to the information she got online,  through the years, around 150 historical houses and farmsteads have been moved to the museum, the oldest open-air one in the world. It also made mentioned that the museum depicted urban life in Sweden during the 18th and the 19th century. It is like it is a living museum, Maya mused. Ricky and Maya visited most of the houses and farmstead. They also liked the fact that there are historical guides in the houses and farmsteads and that they are wearing period clothes. It made the experience much more interesting. It was like being transported to 18th and 19th century Sweden.

Maya and Richard also watched traditional glassmaking and pottery making in the workshop section of the museum’s town quarter. There was also a folk show which they enjoyed a lot. They also ate traditional Swedish food. As they went around, they ended up in the market and in it was a traditional photo booth of sort, where you can wear period costumes and have a souvenir photo taken in black and white, reminiscent of old times. Maya egged Richard in trying it so that they have a nice souvenir of the place. They posed for the photographer who was also wearing period clothes. Some of the other tourists also took photos of them, while they laughed and had fun posing. Maybe, they thought, it was not very common that two Asians posed here, wearing Swedish period clothes. Some of them even remarked that they looked good together. They just looked meaningfully at each other and smiled at their audience. They got a copy each of their photo, wherein Richard was standing a little behind Maya, his hand on her shoulder, while Maya was sitting on the bench with hands on her lap.

Maya looked at the framed photo she was holding, and smiled at the memories. She then remembered Richard’s note and opened it.

                                                   Dearest Maya,

                                                  I’m sorry.

I hope we can talk, and let me explain, when you are ready.

                                                 Yours for always,

                                                 Ricky

Several minutes after, Richard’s interoffice chat program beeped. There was a message from Maya’s username. All it said was:

                                             60%!

Richard smiled.

Suddenly Love – Chapter 3

Chapter 3
Hopelessly drawn

Richard made inroads on the papers on his desk when he returned to his office after his meeting with Maya. He is really glad to have seen her, finally. He missed her a lot and their moments in Stockholm. He have a lot of things to tell her, share with her. Though, Richard also knows he needs to be patient and earn his way back to her good graces.

The past two weeks that Richard had assumed the position of CEO, he had very little time for himself. His father left the company in order, but it is on the traditional and conservative side, and he plans to make some changes. It has to be gradual, he thought, as people hates drastic changes. Added to the fact, he needed to cheer up his mother, Esmeralda. She and his father have been inseparable all throughout their lives, that the reality of her husband gone is making her very sad. His sister Rafi helped, but her young daughter and her husband needed her, so she went back to Sweden several days ago.

Now, papers done. Richard is waiting for his secretary’s return to find out what was Maya’s reaction with his ‘little gift’, his opening salvo in his campaign to make it up to Maya, forgive him, and have his Maya back.

There was a knock on his door. Then his secretary entered.

“Sir Richard, naibigay ko na po iyong ipinabibigay niyo kay Ms. Maya.” Marissa reported to him. “Kinuha naman po niya.”

“Thank you Marissa. What was her reaction?” He asked, curious to know if Maya looked mad when she received the coffee and the muffin.

“Wala naman po, Sir. She just thanked me.” His secretary said briefly. “Is there anything else you want me to do, Sir Richard?”

“No, wala na, and many thanks again, Marissa.” Richard said. He know that he does not need to ask his secretary to keep this thing to herself. He is confident that what he asked his secretary to do will not be a fodder to the company gossip mill. He knew her and her husband Sonny even before he left the company more than two years ago. Sonny was his old EA. He was a ninong at their wedding. They are good people.

Richard does not expect a call from Maya to thank him as at the moment, he knew she still mad at him. But also knew that she got the significance of his ‘little gift’. Maya once told him that her favorite coffee brew and chocolate muffins with M&Ms on top, are her comfort food when she is stressing out, sad, or just want to cheer herself up. No matter how unhealthy, and even if it was just psychological, she explained to Richard, the first rush of hot cafe americano in her system, coupled with the super sweet taste of chocolate muffin and M&Ms, makes her happy. Richard remembered. When it comes to Maya, his mind is like that of a computer – recording, autosaving, and remembering everything.

Richard’s trip down memory lane

The trip to Sweden was something Richard was reluctant to take. But he needed to talk to his sister in person and get her opinion on the latest development in their family’s drama, or rather the latest episode in his and his father’s drama, so he thought at that time. He also hasn’t seen her in over a year. He had some free time so, he found himself booking a flight from London where he was living and working as a venture capitalist, to Sweden via Amsterdam. He decided to see one of his old Harvard friends living in Holland, might as well, before visiting his sister Rafaella, her husband Magnus and his little niece.

He first noticed Maya while waiting for their flight to Stockholm. She was late getting into the departure lounge. She was looking for a seat. He noticed her beautiful face, graceful bearing, and ready smile for everyone. He guessed right on that she is from the Philippines. But he just ignored the instant attraction to her. He thought, life is complicated enough at the moment, and beside, he was not really looking for any romantic entanglements during this trip or the past two years living abroad, dalliances yes, but anything involving deeper emotions, he shied away from. Then, if she is really a Filipina, she might, in the long run, connect him to his father’s company and the wealthy Lims. He had been burned that way before. There was also that Josephine thing! Though, he thought, it is extremely premature and too early to tell that this beautiful lady will turned out like the women he knew in the past. Besides, she might not want to get to know him, as well. And, I am overthinking things, he admonished himself, hindi mo pa nga kilala man lang. She looked tired also. He almost offered her his seat, but he was beaten to it by guy who was also looking at her admiringly. Then they boarded and he lost sight of her.

When the plane landed in Arlanda, he exited promptly. He just want to be at Rafi’s home and sleep. He was checking the number for the baggage claim carousel of his flight when someone bumped into him. He steadied the person and looked at her. Oh, it is the woman in Amsterdam that I admired, he mused. She does look very tired and sleepy, but still so beautiful with her heart-shaped face, and the smile that lit her face. They talked a bit, then he went ahead of her.

On the way to Rafi’s family’s house, he can’t get out her out of his head. Thoughts of her, was even distracting him from his problems. He barely listened to Rafi’s chatter while she navigated the streets of Stockholm. After he greeted Magnus, looked at his sleeping niece, Philippa, he went to sleep at the guestroom Rafi always prepared when he visits. Sleep didn’t come easily, and the last thought he had before succumbing to sleep was that of the woman he bumped into.

The folowing morning, he was up early. He knew from previous visits, that is the only day of the week that his sister and her family sleep in late. He decided to just leave them a note, to tell them that he went out. He wanted to clear his head also. He thought a walk around Gamla stan will do him good. He can just grab a bite at one of the cafe/bars there that he liked before. Richard headed to the central train station with a coffee he bought at one of the cafes he passed by. He just can’t resist the caffeine boost to his system a steaming cup of coffee usually does. While looking at the train schedules, someone bumped into him again and made him spilled the coffee he was about to drink. Good thing his reflexes were good. He looked at the other person, and  realized, that it is her again! He impulsively decided to get to know her better, as if there is an unseen force that propelled him – from introducing himself, to riding with her in the train to Gamla stan. She was easy to talk to and had this sunny personality and zest for life. Her face lit up when she was telling him the places she wanted to see and some of her funny experiences abroad. It took supreme effort to leave her when they got off the train.

Richard regretted parting ways with Maya. Several minutes after he said goodbye, he decided to ask her if he can accompany her. He went after her, but  too late, she disappeared among the throng of people going to the royal palace. He proceeded to the cafe he liked from last time, but his mind was not in the food and another cup of coffee. He knew she was going for a boat tour afterwards, so he just walked to the boat tour dock and waited for her to show up. True enough, several minutes later, Maya was there. It rain a bit and the steps going to the tour boat was a bit slippery. She almost slipped.

“Ooops, be careful, Ms. Maya Dela Rosa. Three times na that I am saving you!” He said by way of greeting her. “Paano na lang kung wala ako!”

“Ricky!!!”. Maya exclaimed, seemingly happy to see Richard. “Good to see you here. I am not usually this clumsy. Kapag nandiyan ka lang yata! You will take the sightseeing tour also?”

“I would like go with you sana. I found going around Gamla stan alone, boring! Would that be okay with you?” Richard asked. “I haven’t done this the past several  times I was in Stockholm.”

“Of course, I would be happy with the company!” Maya smiled at Richard, and thanked him as he assisted her to the best seats they could find for the water tour of Stockholm.

The tour boat went on its way, and the tour guides took them along the most beautiful sites of Stockholm, telling them of the history behind a building, a structure, a scenic area, the locks that connected the city. Maya and Richard were having fun. Maya took lots of pictures. Richard offered to take some of hers, and they even had ‘selfies’, which Richard did not normally like having. It seemed like his inner child and unsophisticated side got loose with Maya. He never had this fun in a long time. In between the sites, they chatted about general stuffs. When the tour ended, Richard was reluctant to let Maya go. He invited her to have coffee with him and promised to show her more of the sites in Gamla stan. He discovered that Maya likes old buildings, old churches and all things old, and Gamla stan has a lot of those.

While waiting for their orders, they continued chatting, as if they have not been doing so since they met this morning. This time, the talk got a bit more specific. Maya asked Richard about his work and he told him about his job in London, how it was living there. He told Maya he is used to being on his own as he did that in the States while finishing his advanced studies. Then Maya told him about her job, where she works, and he didn’t know at first how he would react.

You work for Lim Corporation? In what capacity?” He asked, while swallowing hard, trying to contain his surprise.

“I’m the head of the company’s foundation. Compared to the other employees, I’m new. I just started several months ago.” Maya said, not noticing Richard’s startled expression when she mentioned where she works. “But I like my job. It is also along the lines of my previous job with the UN. Do you know the company?”

Richard didn’t know exactly what came to him at that moment, probably a knee-jerk reaction as coupled with his surprise, all his problems and the situation he was in, came rushing back. He didn’t want to lie directly to Maya, and outrightly deny his connection to Lim Corporation, so he changed the topic and asked her what exactly she does as the head of the foundation and its connection to her being in Sweden for the training she mentioned.

Maya told him about the projects and programs they were doing before she left the country, and that, hopefully the foundation can do more. The invitation to join this training came at the right time since she told him, it is her boss’ mandate, Sir Roberto Lim, to expand the reach of the foundation. Richard was surprised to hear that since it was so uncharacteristic of his father. Maya also sounded she respected and liked his father. One thing is clear to Richard, Lim Corporation is indeed lucky to have Maya, seeing how passionate she is when discussing her work and the things they are doing.

They walked around Gamla stan’s cobbled streets, afterwards, taking lots of photos along the way. One thing Richard discovered about Maya, right on, she likes taking photos, which she organize into online albums. The day extended to night as they also had dinner there. This time the talk was about their likes and dislikes. Maya likes old movies, and so does he. They differ though in their tastes of books. Maya likes detective stories, crime thrillers, and sappy period romances, while he tends towards biographies, books about wars, and business. He was not into fiction much. Maya also mentioned life as a diplomat’s daugther and he told her more of his adventures as a student in the States, and as an expat in England.

“Naku, Ricky, it is getting late na pala. I need to go back to the hotel.” Maya exclaimed when she noticed that it was already 10PM. “First day pa naman namin bukas. Saka baka hinahanap ka na nung sumundo sa iyo sa airport.”

“Oh, okay. I will take you back. And no, she is not looking for me. Sanay na iyon sa akin.” Richard said, not noticing the time too. He was enjoying her company too much. “And by the way, sister ko iyon, and her name is Rafaella.” He added, needing to clarify to Maya that the one who fetched him was not a special someone, in a romantic way.

They walked back to the train station. He was solicitous in assisting Maya and making sure that she was inside her hotel before he left her. They also agreed to meet the day after since Maya said that the following night, the institute who organized the training will have a welcome party for the participants. Maya gave him the sweetest smile and thanked him for their wonderful day together.

The following nights and weekend in Stockholm, were the best of Richard’s life. He didn’t expect he will find love there, but he did, until he had to leave her unexpectedly.

Richard suddenly noticed that it was already dark outside. He had been lost in thoughts the past hour. He needed to see his mom and have dinner with her. But before he leave the office, he needed to do one more thing. He got something from his drawer, then wrote something in a small card, put the card in an envelope, and called his secretary.

“Yes, Sir Richard.” Marissa asked as soon as she entered his office.

“Marissa, I have another favor to ask please. Can you buy a frame for this, then put it in a nice box, then attach this small envelope, then give this to Maya as soon as you get here tomorrow morning.” He instructed Marissa, who took a look at what he was holding, and smiled.

“Okay, Sir Richard. Ako na po ang bahala dito.” She said, while holding what Richard gave her carefully. Marissa never thought her boss could be like this, romantic. She left his office to work on his latest request.

“Maya, I hope this will take me closer to being forgiven.” Richard mused. Then left the office. He is looking forward to tomorrow, and another day of sharing the same space with Maya. He hopes, space is not the only thing they will share in the future.

Suddenly Love – Chapter 2

Note: Since today is my blog’s ‘monthsary’, here’s Chapter 2! 🙂 Thank you for the comments, likes, and for reading Chapter 1, I’m so touched! 🙂

Chapter 2
Magnetic pull

Maya tried to control her emotions when she returned to her office. She knew Emman will be full of questions. She noticed him looking at her and Richard several times. He is not only her asistant manager, he is also a very dear friend. True enough, she found him inside her office.

“Sis, what happened back there? Magkakilala pala kayo ni Mr. Lim? Saan at paano? He just got back from abroad recently ah, and also ikaw din! Saka ngayon ka pa lang din pumasok since you returned. Don’t tell me…..?” Emman asked, then started to put two and two together. “Nagkakilala kayo sa abroad! What a supreme coincidence! Kwento naman diyan.”

“Emman, yes, we met in Stockholm. It is a long story and I would rather not talk about it at the moment, please! Basta kapag ready na ako, I will tell you.” Maya pleaded as she is starting to have a headache and she hasn’t fully recovered from her whole unexpected encounter with Richard!

“Okay, I understand. Kung gusto mo ng kausap, nandito lang ako.” Emman assured Maya, seeing her getting distressed by the situation. “Iwan na muna kita. Ayusin ko lang iyong details ng project natin sa Barangay Pag-asa.”

“Thank you, Emman.” Maya said, then stared out when Emman left, not really looking at the magnificent view of Manila Bay from her all glass office walls. She can’t stop the rush of memories either, so she let it flow.

One month ago

Maya arrived in Stockholm in the middle of the night. She is very tired as she have been traveling for almost 24 hours now. As soon as she boarded the plane in Amsterdam for Stockholm, she fell into deep sleep in the plane, her tiredness overpowering her hunger pangs. Now, she is yawning as she tried to find her way to the baggage claim area of Arlanda Airport. Suddenly, she collided into someone as she was not really looking.

“Hey, miss, please be careful, and watch out where you are going!” The guy told Maya as he steadied her and smiled at her. “You must have been traveling long. You didn’t notice me at all.”

Maya took a look at the guy to apologize, and instead got mesmerized by his lopsided smile and chinito good looks. She can’t gauge promptly what his nationality is. He looks Chinese, but he can also be a Korean or a Singaporean or a Japanese. It never occured to her to think that he maybe Filipino too.  Her mental process was a bit slow at that time.

“I’m so sorry, I was not really paying attention. I’m so sleepy and tired. I have been traveling for almost 24 hours now!” Maya explained as she gave the stranger a smile, that people said lit up her whole face. She and the chinito guy started to walk together to the baggage claim carousel of their flight.

“I know the feeling. Long flights are really terribly hard on the body. Just be careful, okay. Have a nice evening.” He said and waved at her as he went ahead, got his small luggage and then exited the terminal.

Maya saw him next with a beautiful lady, welcoming him, and leading him out to the car park. She started looking for the conference liaison officer who is supposed to pick her up take her to her hotel. Good thing, she mused, she would have tomorrow as a free day, to rest and explore Stockholm.

“Hi! Are you Maya Dela Rosa, from the Philippines?” A tall blond girl with a very friendly smile approached Maya.

“Yes, I am.” Maya confirmed. “Are you Elin Johansson? I was told I will be met by Elin.”

“Yes, I’m Elin. Welcome to Sweden, Maya. I will take you the hotel where all the other participants are staying.” Elin directed Maya to where she parked her car. She asked her how was her flight, and some information about the Philippines, which she said she would like to see one day, as her friends loved and enjoyed visiting Palawan very much. Elin left her after she checked her in. As soon as she finished her nightly rituals, Maya went to a deep sleep.

Maya was up bright and early, despite the fact that she only slept several hours. She know she is suffering from jet lag again. But this is not too bad, as compared to when she gets home. She just needed to cope on waking up early, even if she only have little sleep for the next sevreral days. After eating breakfast and meeting some of the participants from various nationalities, she decided to explore the city on her own. She likes doing that. Before she left the Philippines, she researched Stcokholm, a habit of hers before she goes to a new country, and decided she will first take one of the boat tours to get herself familiar with the place, then decide hat she would like to see on her first day here, among the very many interesting Stockholm attractions she read online and heard from friends.

One hour after, Maya was at the central train station, trying to figure out which train to take to Gamla stan, the old town of Stockholm, which according to one of the websites she have been to, is ‘one of the largest and well-preserved city centers in Europe.’ This also where she can also take the boat tour. She was looking at the train schedules, and the platform she needed to take, not paying attention, so she bumped into someone again, as she turned abruptly from the monitor, and stepped on that person’s left shoe, spilling the coffee he was holding.

“Oh, sorry, sorry. I was not really looking!” Maya said and since she is a bit rattled, she didn’t notice that she spoke a bit of Filipino, while talking a closer look at the person she bumped into. “I’m really sorry, talaga.”

“Okay lang, Miss, sa susunod mag-ingat ka na please, second time na ito. Baka, next time, it is not me anymore.” The guy spoke teasingly in a mixed of Filipino and English, he was smiling sheepishly at Maya too. “Pero this time, pareho tayo, I was a bit distracted too.”

“You? Hi! And Filipino ka pala!” Maya said, astonished, as she looked closely for he was the guy she bumped into the airport. “Akala ko, Chinese ka, from mainland China, I mean, or a Singaporean, at pwede ring Japanese o Korean. Never thought na Filipino ka rin.”

“Yes, I’m Filipino, Filipino-Chinese. I was born in the Philippines.” He replied. “Im Ricky Lim, by the way. I’m please to meet you Miss…..?”

“Oh, I’m Maya Dela Rosa. Nice to meet you too Ricky.” Maya said as she offered her hand for Richard to shake. “Are you here on vacation or on official business?”

“I’m here on vacation. I’m actually based in England, not the Philippines. I am just visiting someone here in Stockholm.” He explained vaguely. “How about you?”

“I’m here on official business. My company sent me to attend a training for our corporate social responsibility programs. Pero, tomorrow pa ang start, kaya heto, sinasamantala ko ang free time ko. I would like to explore Stockholm. What I have read so far about the city was very interesting!”

“Saan ka pupunta ngayon? Sa Gamla stan? “ Richard asked. “I’m also going there. Come, let’ s go to the track where we can take our train to Gamla stan. That is, if is okay that I ride with you na lang since we will take the same train.”

Maya agreed as he is also going there anyway. She might as well have a kababayan to travel with. He sounded like he know the place and this is not his first time in Stokholm. Besides, magaan ang pakiramdam niya, for some reason and against her natural caution, on this chinito guy, even of they just met.

On the way to their destination, Maya told Richard the places she would like to see. While Richard, on the other hand, just listened mostly to Maya. In one of the train’s stops, a man who had obviously been drinking boarded the train, saw Maya and sidled to her, too close for comfort, and it really felt, and looked like, that he was invading her personal space. Richard went on a protective mode and shielded Maya from the guy. He also pretended to be her boyfriend.

“Baby, is this guy bothering you?” He asked while putting his arm on her shoulders, and looking at the guy with a tiger look. “Buddy, could you give my girl some space please, I think you are too close to her!”

The guy looked at Richard, sized him up, then at Maya. He quietly went to the other side of the train. Maya was surprised at what Richard did. Her heart jumped, and beat a little faster. She really felt protected, cared for.

“Thank you, Ricky. I think he is a bit harmless. Maybe, just had too much to drink, you know, Saturday night, last night. I just got surprised. I realy don’t like people crowding my personal space, especially guys.” Maya smiled at Richard, not realizing that at that moment, she looked so beautiful to the guy beside her.

“Hmmm, does that happened to you often? I mean, guys doing that. Sorry, if my question is a bit personal.” Richard asked, seemingly very curious.

“No naman, sometimes lang. May makulit din, will ask for a phone number or an e-mail address. I just politely declined.” Maya said, then shrugged, unconsciously. “I feel flattered, of course in a way. But I would like to get to know people, particularly guys, a bit better first before I give out personal information like that.”

Maya and Richard chatted about places they have been and some of the most unforgettable experiences they had. It was mostly Maya talking and Richard, looking at her, listening intently.

They reached their destination after 30 minutes or so.

“So, paano Ricky, thanks for the company on the train ride and for protecting me. I will be on my way na, and baka you need to be somewhere else na rin.” Maya said, getting sad that they will part ways na, for some reason which she can’t define yet.

“Okay, enjoy your tour of Stockholm. Take care.” He gave her another of his lopsided smiles, then sauntered off to the opposite direction. Maya watched him go. Suddenly wishing he can go with her explore the place. Ah, she is not here to get attracted to someone. Saka, she is used naman to exploring a new place on her own. Maya told herself. She also remembered the lady who picked Ricky up at the airport, and thought that maybe, he has a special someone already. She walked towards the direction of the royal palace.

Maya’s trip down memory lane was interrupted by the sound of her intercom.

“Ms. Maya, Mr. Lim’s secretary is here. May ibibigay lang daw sa iyo.” Minerva said over the intercom.

“Okay, please send her in.” Maya is puzzled, at the same time curious.

Marissa was holding a paper bag and a cup of coffee, and judging by the smell, it is Maya’s favorite coffee. Maya simply thanked Marissa, after she told her that Mr. Lim sent her to give the coffee and the paper bag to her.  She opened the bag after Marissa left. Inside, she saw her favorite chocolate muffin with a sprinkling of M&Ms on top. There was no note with the paper bag and the coffee, but she knew what it meant. Ah, Ricky, was also she managed to say, as her heart went a flutter.

Suddenly Love – Chapter 1

Chapter 1
Jet-lagged and jolted

Maya parked her car in the first space she found in the basement parking of her company’s building. Then, she hit the elevator going to her office fast. She is running late. Maya has not been sleeping properly the past several days since she returned from Europe. Jet lag usually hit her harder when she gets home, than when she is wherever she was that was several time zones ahead or behind that of the Philippines. Compounding her inability to sleep properly, is the thought of him. He even invaded her dreams. Maya can’t still understand what exactly happend to him, to them, whatever it was that they had for such a short time. She is tired of thinking and analyzing. Hopefully, work can distract her from remembering their times together. She does need to attend to a lot of things after being away for a month. She walked to her office with the resolution that she would just try to not think about the guy who broke her heart, maybe without him intending to or knowing it.

Maya is the head of the foundation of Lim Corporation. It is a job that suits her perfectly, and that she was lucky to find it as soon as she decided to move back to the Phlippines after years of working in various parts of the world, mostly with agencies connected to the humanitarian arm of the United Nations. She wanted to settle down in the Philippines after years of working abroad and prior to that, living wherever her father, a diplomat, was posted.

She likes helping people a lot, being able to do something to make their lives better, especially underprivileged, but deserving students, whom the company give scholarships to, and communities that they help to be self-sufficient. She also likes going to communities, being a partner in their development by empowering people to do more, and achieve more, through the livelihood seminars, trainings and other assistance the foundation do for them.

Maya went to Sweden several weeks ago to attend a conference and a seminar on how private organizations like Lim Corporation can partner effectively with non-governmental organizations and the government to help more communities. It was a great opportunity for her and she was glad to be part of that program. She had learned a lot. However, what happened to her outside her training hours, is something that’s giving her the sleepless nights, and heartache. But at the moment, she can’t do anything about it, and maybe, it was just that, she mused, she can’t do anything about it anymore. Stop, Maya, hayan ka na naman. She told herself. Maybe, I should just forget him, she thought. They barely started anyway, then it was over. Besides, he is at the other side of the world.

“Ms. Maya, welcome back! I’m so happy to see you.” Her secretary, Minerva, greeted her. “And you are just in time. You have a meeting with the new CEO of the company in the afternoon. Sorry, hindi na kita, na-inform. Last minute kasi ang request ng executive assistant ni Mr. Lim. On the way ka na rin naman dito sa office kaya hindi na kita tinawagan.”

“Oh, okay. It’s alright Minerva, no worries.” She assured her secretary. “Let me just settle in a bit. Hindi pa kasi ako masyadong nakakatulog ng maayos. Pero I’m fine naman. Nasaan na si Emman. I will need him for the presentation.”

Maya knew that they have a new CEO. While she was attending the training in Sweden, she read in the online edition of one the country’s leading newspapers, that her boss, Mr. Roberto Lim passed away, and that his estranged son, took over the family corporation soon after. She also received a company e-mail on Richard Lim’s appointment. Maya didn’t know much about Richard Lim as he was already out of the company when she was hired almost a year ago. She was not aware on what really happened between father and son. There was a bit of talk about it in the office, but she does not like listening to office gossips, so she just ignored what was being said. It didn’t concern her, and her work, anyway. Maya had thought of checking Richard Lim’s profile, when she just started, but never got around to doing so due to the amount of work that needed to be done at the foundation when she assumed leadership of it. It was a shock to know that her Sir Roberto died. Though, she knew that he had been a bit sickly the past several months. He had been a strict, no nonsense boss, but had been very fair. He really was very active in pushing the activities of the foundation as he wanted to give back to the people who supported his various businesses through the years – from real estate developments, to shipping, manufacturing, telecommunications, and an airline company. She was sad at his passing and regretted that she missed his funeral.

Several cups of coffee later, Maya is prepped up for the meeting with her new boss. Emman, her assistant manager, had already prepared a presentation of their current projects and programs, the ones that they have finished the past several months, and their future ones. Maya just checked his prepared materials. He had also kept her updated via e-mail while she was abroad so she knew all the details of their current programs and projects. She told Emman that she will do the presentation and he should just go with her, just in case, there are aspects or details she overlooked.

Maya arrived at the conference room, 15 minutes early, so she has some lead time before Mr. Lim arrives. Her secretary Minerva also went with her and Emman. The door opened, several minutes after, and Mr. Lim, his executive assistant, and secretary entered the room. Maya looked up from her laptop and got the shock of her life.

“Ricky!!! What are you doing here? I thought you work in London? I’m supposed to meet my new boss here.” She asked, so surprised to see the man who has been haunting her dreams. She looked at his handsome chinito face, then the realization, Richard, Ricky… Lim and Lim! “Don’t tell me, you are….?”

“Hi Maya! Yes I am your new boss. I’m Richard Lim. Ricky to friends and family.” Richard said, making it crystal clear to Maya that, he, and her Ricky, are one and the same person. “How have you been?”

“Ha, ah, errr, I’m fine!” Maya she replied automatically. Then, she realized that aside from the fact that he had left without even a goodbye, he was not completely honest with her, that he lied to her, in a way. Her expression turned from surprise to stone-faced and it was an effort to put up a professional facade. “You want to see me, Sir, for an update of our projects? Let me know if I should get started with our presentation.”

Richard looked at Maya’s beautiful face, her expressive eyes, not being able to hide completely her hurt expression. He know that he have a lot of explaining to do, but he can’t do it at the moment, they have an audience. They are getting curious at the interplay between Maya and him.

“Err, yes. Since I took over after my father died, I have been meeting with various members of the management committee. You were the only one I haven’t met yet since you were abroad.” Richard explained as he settled at the head of the conference table. “Could you please brief me on our projects and other programs the foundation are undertaking at the moment. Also, about future plans and projects. I need to get updated for my meeting with our board tomorrow.”

“First, my condolences, Mr. Lim, on the passing of Sir Roberto.” Maya said simply, then proceeded to give Richard a summary of what the foundation has been doing so far, and the programs and projects they have lined up, also the timeline for accomplishing it.

Richard asked several questions. After an hour, they have finished. Maya detached ler laptop from the projector, gathered her papers, handed everything over to Minerva, and started leaving the room.

“Maya, ah errr, Ms. Dela Rosa, can you plase stay a little bit. I need to talk to you alone, please.” Richard said before Maya can open the door. He really wanted to talk to her to clear the air.

Maya looked at Minerva and Emman, and told them to go ahead. Richard’s EA, Lisa and his secretary, Marissa, left with them. Their eyes and expressions can’t hide their curiousity.

“Yes Sir, ano po iyon?” Maya asked, not looking at Richard directly.

“Maya could you please stop calling me, Sir, tayong dalawa na lang dito, please?” Richard requested, knowing, Maya is now antagonistic towards him. She has a valid reason to be. But he would like to explain. “Call me Richard please, or Ricky.”

“If you don’t mind, Sir. I would rather call you Mr. Lim since you are my boss and I don’t really know you on a personal level. Ricky or Richard is just too familiar!” Maya insisted.

“But, we know each other quite very well naman, di ba? Okay lang when we are with other people here at the office, but when we are alone, please call me Richard or Ricky?” Richard insisted as he moved forward to try to get hold of her hand.

“No, Sir, we don’t know each other well. We don’t know each other period. I don’t know you at all. I I used to know a Ricky but you are not him, and it looked like he was not what he seemed to be!” Maya avoided Richard’s touch. ”If you will excuse me, Sir. I need to go back to my office. I have a lot of work to do since I have been away for a month.”

Maya left the conference room without a backward glance. She is just too hurt, too confused and unsettled at the moment to hear his explanation.

Richard let Maya go, and decided to bid his time with her. He knew he had his work cut out for him. Maybe, today is not the best time to talk to her. She just got back, and this is their work environment. He was not thinking clearly. All he thought was, seeing her again, finally. Richard was really planning on asking Maya to coffee after her presentation. But maybe, he thought, it would be better to let Maya’s anger subside before he approach her again. He should have tried harder to seek her our as soon as she returned, outside of the office setting. He called her mobile phone, which he got from his EA, once, after she arrived back but when she didn’t pick up, he thought she might be having a bad case of jet lag. She told him in one of their conversations, while sitting in a cafe in Stockholm, about her difficulty adjusting her sleeping pattern when she returns to the country from abroad. Then something came up again that he needed to attend to, ah too many responsibilities, and this is his first opportunity to see her.

Richard is set on clearing the air with Maya so they can still continue what they have started in Sweden. This time, he will be completely honest with her. He didn’t intend to lie to her by omission when he met her, but he had his reasons. By the time, he decided to tell her the truth, he can’t anymore due to circumstances beyond his control. Richard vowed he will make it up to Maya, and will work very hard to win her trust again, and her heart. Yes, he has feelings for her.

Doors – Epilogue

Epilogue
1+1 = 2 + 2 = 4

One year later

Maya is lying in a hammock, relaxing, reading a novel, or trying to read one! Sharing the hammock with her is Richard, who is cuddling her tight, as he tried several times to distract her from reading, with little touches here and there, and kisses everywhere, until finally, she gave up. She just can’t concentrate anymore. His touches generated the reaction he wanted. She had been reading the same page several times now and still, can’t remember a word she had read. Earlier, Richard and she made a bet – that he can distract her from her book, and that he can do it within 10 minutes. Maya bet that he can’t. She told him she had been looking forward to reading this novel and this is her first opportunity to do so.

“Ricky, naman eh, you don’t fight fair! “Maya good-naturedly complained as she pouted at her husband and pinched him in the cheek!

“Sweetheart, I warned you that I will use everything in my arsenal to distract you and win that bet! All’s fair in war and love!” Richard said with a big grin. “Now that I won, hmmm, I will think about my prize later, for now, I want my wife’s full and undivided attention. I just want to cuddle with you in the hammock for a while. Would that be okay, my dearest wife?”

“Of course, husband dear.” Maya setttled comfortable on Richard’s chest as she pushed to make the hammock sway with the wind. With the magnificent view infront of them and the peace and quiet of the place, they rested and enjoy each other’s company on their very special day. Today is their first wedding anniversary. Maya thought, life could have not been better. Richard thought and feel the same. He is, indeed, the luckiest guy in the world. Both can’t help but remember their first wonderful year together as husband and wife.

One year ago

Maya woke up before Richard did the morning after their wedding, and their first night at the Guevarra mansion. She stared at the guy sharing the bed with her, the face on the other pillow on her bed that she wouldn’t get tired of seeing for the rest of her life. Her husband. It has a wonderful ring to it. She touched his beloved face, marvelling how gentle he was with her, when he made her his, and the passion that they elicited from each other all night long. While Maya was doing that, Richard opened his eyes and look at his beloved wife. He looked at her with so much love, and started kissing her, touching her, and that led to a bout of morning lovemaking.

They stayed in San Nicolas several more days, arranged for Mang Manuel and Aling Isidra to continue taking care of their house, spent time with the Dela Rosas. They went back to Manila, and from there made ther trip to Europe, another of Richard’s presents to Maya. He knew Maya has been to some places there, but that was work-related. He wanted her to see the old world in a relax way. Their first stop was Barcelona, then off to Rome, Paris, Holland, and the last stop was London. Richard took Maya to West End and they watched her favorite musical. Maya and Richard’s days were spent seeing the sights, resting at cafes, eating at restaurants, and the nights were spent making passionate love. Their passion not abating, but getting more and more intense as they got more familiar and attuned with their bodies wants and desires.

Maya and Richard returned to the Philippines, a month after. Instead of settling in the village where Don Roberto and Donya Esmeralda live, they opted to stay at the penthouse of one of the upscale high-rises owned by Lim Properties. Both like the unencumbered view of the city. Their evenings were spent cuddling, drinking wine sometimes, chatting about their day, as they looked at the city at night from their window seat before they to go sleep. Maya and Richard decided they will just move to a house when they have kids. They talked about it, but decided that they will just take it in stride, no pressure, depending on God’s will. In the meantime, they strengthened their foundation as a couple – from compromises, to keeping their lines of communication open, to spending quality time with each other, and loving each other in all the ways they can do or show.

Maya liked her work with WHO, and Richard supported her career 100 percent even if it means getting separated from her from time to to time as her work requires traveling a lot. Richard knew that Maya’s career is part of who is. Maya is the same to Richard. She knew she married a busy man, and one with a lot of responsibiities. She made their home a haven where he could relax and forget the stress of the day. When they have time, they travelled, mostly locally, to all the places they talk about visiting or seeing during the long phone calls they had, when they were just friends. They also spent time at their house in San Nicolas.

Now, after a year, Maya and Richard are at their vacation house in Siargao Island to celebrate their first anniversary. They just fell in love with this secluded place when they saw it several months ago. Luckily, the owner of the beach property agreed to sell and they built this two-storey house with an open lay out. The big veranda on the second floor offers a wonderful view of the vast sea. The place is also blessed with a white, sandy beach, and the waves are not too big, as compared to other parts of Siargao, as their beach property is a bit on the inland side. It is a bit far from Manila, but Richard and Maya consider the travel here part of the adventure.

Maya heard Richard’s light snoring, and realized that her husband fell asleep while she was reminiscing, while they were reminiscing. She noticed that it is already late afternoon so she gently untangled herself from Richard’s embrace, and slowly got out of the hammock, trying hard not to wake him. Richard, in his sleep, protested, but settled back in the hammock. Maya thought her husband must really be tired from their trip, and the last minute work he attended to before their vacation. When they got here yesterday, they didn’t exactly sleep right away. Maya went downstairs to start preparing her treat for her husband on their anniversary. She cooked his favorite food, set the table, and chilled a bottle of champagne. She then went to their bedroom to shower, and to prepare the second part of her surprise. Maya, surveyed everything one more time, and waited for her husband in the day bed downstairs, passing the time with the book she was not able to read earlier.

Richard woke from his nap, two hours after Maya left him. He must really be tired to just conked out like that, he mused. He decided to take a shower before he look for his wife. Judging by the smell coming from downstairs, Maya had prepared his favorite food. When he entered their bedroom, he noticed the bed decorated with rose petals, and the candles perched on the side table and the windows,  and got an idea that he is in for a treat from his wonderful wife. Well, this was the prize he was planning to tease her from their bet earlier, he mused. Good thing, they were of the same mind!  Wearing a soft, loose white shirt, unbuttoned halfway, and dark blue loose cotton pants, Richard went downstairs and saw Maya engrossed in her book. What he saw was just too tempting to resist. Richard tiptoed to where Maya is, and kissed her on her bare shoulder. Her thin halter maxi dress, exposing most of her back to his heated gaze.

“Sweetheart, gising ka na!” Maya greeted and gave Ricky a radiant smile.”Halika na dinner is ready. Gutom ka na ba?”

She held Richard’s hand and let him to the dining area. The table is elegantly set, with tall candles in the center and scattered petals adding accent to the violet and yellow table cloth. Richard held out the seat for Maya and took the seat on her left side. Maya started serving Richard the appetizer, gambas al jillo, his favorite, as soon as they got settled on their seats. Richard, opened the bottle of champagne, but when he was about to pour her a glass, Maya stopped Richard by touching his arm.

“Only water for me, please, sweetheart .” She said simply.

“But why sweetheart? Di ba, you like champagne?“ Richard asked, puzzled. “Saka anniversary dinner natin ito, isn’t it?”

“Errr, kasi sweetheart, hindi ako pwedeng uminom ng anything with alcohol for the next seven months, or baka beyond pa.” Maya said, looking at her husband and checking if he got what she is trying to say to him.

“Bakit seven months…..? Oh you mean…?….Sweetheart???” He asked, turning inarticulate with the realization.

“Yes, Mr. Lim, magiging daddy ka na in seven months. I’m two months pregnant. I just confirmed it the other day! Kaya pala I was feeling nauseous. Then I realized I haven’t had my period in a while, kasi, di ba, irregular kasi ako!” Maya said happily. “I decided to wait for this anniversary vacation to tell you.”

“Maya, sweetheart, magiging parents na tayo!!! Magkaka-baby na tayo? How are you? Are you feeling okay?” Richard asked one after the other as he went to Maya’s side, hugged her and kissed her on the lips and touched her tummy reverently. “How are you there, my little angel?”

“Yes, I am okay, Ricky. Minsan lang I feel very sleepy lately, and nauseous. Pero, don’t worry, healthy na healthy kami nitong little girl natin.” Maya said as she cuddled to Ricky.

“Little girl? Hindi pwedeng little boy muna, sweetheart.” Richard teased his wife. “Seriously, sweetheart, whether our baby is a boy or a girl, I will be the happiest dad and husband in the world, as long as you and our baby are okay.”

Richard got his glass of champagne, and gave Maya her glass of water and offered a toast. “To us, sweetheart, happy anniversary, and to our baby, and all the kids we will have. I can’t thank you enough for making my life richer and full of colors. I love you very much.”

“Ricky, to us, happy anniversary, and to our baby. Thank you for being the best husband a girl can have. I am thankful for you coming to my life, and for our wonderful life together. I love you very much.” Maya replied as she gave her husband a lingering kiss. However, her grumbling stomach interrupted their passionate interlude.

They had a leisurely dinner, marked by loving gazes, light kisses, and comfortable chatter. After dinner, they decided to take a walk. Hands intertwined, punctuated by little kisses, they walked along the beach. When it got a bit chilly, they returned to the house where Richard carried Maya up to their bedroom, reminiscent of their wedding night.

Maya stood before Richard. She looked so beautiful to him. Maya is equally admiring her husband. Richard started caressing Maya’s face, then touching her lips, which she opened, and for Richard, it is his invitation to kiss her deeper, passionately. They touched everywhere, with Richard, at the same time, untying Maya’s halter dress until it pooled on the floor. Richard looked at Maya with so much love, imagining her getting more beautiful, as she gets bigger and rounder, with their precious baby. They spent most of the night, and their whole vacation, affirming their love for each other.

Seven months later

The hospital room is filled with flowers and balloons. Maya is resting on the bed, while Richard caressed her face, her hair and held her hand. She just been wheeled into the room from the recovery room. Giving birth took quite a long time. In the end, her OB recommended a caesarian operation.

“How are you sweetheart?” Richard asked his wife. He knew it has not been easy for her giving birth to their twins, a son and a daughter. He almost fainted in the delivery room. If only he can take Maya’s pain away. But his  wife assured him all the time that she is okay, and what she is experiencing is part of the miracle of giving birth.

“Okay lang naman ako sweetheart. Natanggal ang lahat ng pain ko ng makita ko ang mga baby natin.” Maya looked at her husband with love. “I love you, Daddy.”

“I love you too, Mommy.” Richard said with so much emotion as he held his wife’s hand and interwined it with his.

In the afternoon, the twins were brought to Maya’s room. Both husband and wife were teary-eyed when they held their babies. They named the twins, Sky and Sunshine. Sky, because they both like the color blue and Sunshine, to represent Maya’s favorite flower. These are also the colors that best represent their world – tranquil and vibrant.

They moved to a house with a large yard soon after. The laughter and shrieks of children having fun as they climbed trees, rode the tire swings with their dad and mom pushing, played in their tree house, became familiar sounds in the lot where the Lims live, in the years that followed. Life couldn’t be better or richer, Maya and Richard thought, with the miracles in their lives, their Sky and Sunshine.

Chapter 16
‘I thee wed’

Three months later

The bridal car stopped infront of the well-lit Guevarra mansion. Maya looked out and noticed where they are. She thought they will go back to her family home after their reception earlier that lasted until late at night. She untangled herself from Richard’s embrace.

“Ricky, sweetheart what are we doing here?” She asked Richard, surprised. “Bakit tayo nandito.”

“Hmmm, come, Mrs. Lim.” Richard said simply, as he got off the car, went to Maya’s side and helped her out, taking extra care with her wedding dress. “Here we are, where we are supposed to be!”

Maya got off the car and they said good bye to Tatay Lem, who congratulated them again before leaving them at the gate. She looked at the house and she now she noticed that it looked all spruced up, well-lit, the front door decorated with flowers of all kinds. Richard held Maya’s hand, opened the front door, they went inside, up to the intricately-designed staircase filled with a profusion of flowers, mostly sunflowers. Richard like before, supported Maya on the back as he assisted her in going up. When they reached the top of the stairs, Maya was surprised when Richard carried her up to the living room of the house, where a cooling bottle of champagne is waiting for them.

Richard popped the cork and poured a glass each for Maya and him.

“To us, Mrs. Lim, for the happiest day of my life. Finally you are mine.” Richard toasted, looking at Maya, with his lopsided smile, and with so much love. “I love you very much.”

“To us, Mr. Lim. Today is the start of our forever and ever, together! I never thought I could be this happy and I am happy to belong to you, and you to me. Here’s to us.” Maya gazed with Richard with so much love in her heart. “I love you more than life itself.”

Richard and Maya clinked their glasses, drank the champagne, and kissed sweetly, then passionately, pouring out the love they feel for each other in those kisses.

Richard kissed Maya lingeringly one more time, then went to the corner, switched on the turntable, then the melody of ‘As Time Goes By’, started filling the air.

“May I have this dance, my beautiful bride?” Richard asked Maya, as he bowed and held out his hand to her.

“Yes, of course, my handsome groom.” Maya went to Richard’s embrace and they swayed to the music, another favorite of Maya’s. She is really amazed how much Richard remembered her favorite music and movies. She really had chosen the best husband in the world. Richard, on the other hand, was thinking that he is the luckiest guy in the world, and anything to make his bride happy, he will do.

Earlier

The aisle of San Nicolas Church was bedecked with a profusion of sunflowers, interpersed with Malaysian mums, and roses of different colors. The orchestra started playing the Mendelssohn’s Wedding March, and everyone looked at the door, which was slowly opening, and then there’s Maya, radiant in her long-sleeved wedding dress made of vintage lace, holding a bouquet of white roses with a big sunflower in the center. She started walking, and her gaze sought Richard, who was waiting at the altar with Don Roberto and Donya Esmeralda, and Ryan, his bestman. When their eyes connected, Richard was hit with intense emotions and got teary-eyed, seeing his beautiful Maya, walking to him, to be with him. Midway, Maya was joined by her Mom and Cristina Rose. Mommy Tessie was crying when she gave Maya to Richard, asked him to promise once more that he will take care of her bunso. Richard assured his future mother-in-law that would be his number one priority. He kissed her Mommy Tessie’s hand, shook Cristina Rose’s hand, while Maya kissed Richard’s mom’s cheek and hugged Don Roberto.

The ceremony went like a dream. Most of the time, Maya felt she was floating, with all the happiness and other emotions she is feeling at the moment. Richard was feeling the same. Then, it was time for their wedding vows.

‘Four years ago, one ordinary afternoon, I never thought my life would take a complete shift, because of a girl who was looking for a vacant seat. The moment she smiled at me, I was captivated. Maya, sweetheart, of all the moments in my life, I was so very thankful for that one. I thought I was settled, that I was complete, that the color I have in my world then was enough, but I was mistaken. It was just an existence, and I only completely lived since I met you. You didn’t only bring colors to my life, you brought a rainbow of it. I promise to love and honor you until the day I die, and when I do, when we do, I will still look for you and would still choose to be with you, in our next lifetimes. I love you very much, more than I can say. I am going to show how big my love is for you for the rest of our lives.’

‘Richard, I have been everywhere the past two years, but everywhere I go, there was only you. It has been like that since I met you. Sometimes, I asked myself, if I had not taken that class, would we still met and ended up together? I would still think so. Kasi, ikaw lang ang para sa akin. You are my destiny and my other half. Hindi man naging madali ang lahat for us, but here we are. I promised to love and honor you. Kaagapay mo ako sa hirap man at ginhawa. Sa lungkot man at saya. Mahal na mahal kita. I will be your partner hanggang sa pagtanda natin. I am so thankful for your love. I’m overwhelmed and sometimes, naiisiip ko I must have done something good, for God to give you to me. I feel so cherished. I love you very much too and it will not change, anuman ang dumating sa buhay natin. Kahit makailang lifetimes pa tayo, ikaw pa rin ang nandito sa puso ko. Saka promise pala, sweetheart, bukod sa puso ko, pwede mong i-safe keep ang passport ko.’

Maya’s last line elicited laughs as they were aware of what happened before she and Richard finally ended up together. Everyone was so happy for them, especially Richard’s parents, Rafi, Mommy Tessie, Mamang, Cristina Rose, Ryan, Emman, and Alexandra, who attended the wedding in her habit.

Then it was time to kiss the bride.

Richard looked at Maya lovingly. At last she is his, he mused. Maya on the other hand, thought, that this is it, we are finally joined by God. Then Richard kissed Maya with all the love he was feeling and she reciprocated with all the emotions in her. They forgot where they were, and all the people watching them, so lost they were in their feelings, until the teasings of their wedding guests, penetrated the universe they were in. Maya and Richard looked at each other sheepishly, kissed chastely one more time, and smiled at their family and friends.

The wedding was followed by a reception at Casa Cielo, the restaurant that Richard mentioned to Maya before he proposed. Like the wedding, it was a night to remember. Instead of a sit down dinner, the place was set up in such a way that all guests can mingle and chat with each other freely. Maya and Richard didn’t want their wedding too formal and full of ceremonies. When Maya and Richard did their wedding dance, everyone present felt the love they have for each other. Don Roberto and Donya Esmeralda remembered their moment like this. Mommy Tessie remembered Daddy Arturo, while all the single ones wish they could find a love like this. Alexandra was just happy to see Richard happy, and wished him and Maya a long and happy life together. There was so much laughter, dancing, and love flowing that night to celebrate Maya and Richard’s marriage.

Maya and Richard were brought back to the present when the music stopped.

“I love you, Mrs. Lim!” Richard said while caressing Maya’s face with the back of his hand.

“I love you more, Mr. Lim!” Maya hugged Richard and planted a soft kiss on his lips. “Pero, sweetheart, hindi mo pa sinasagot ang tanong ko. Why are we here?”

“Sweetheart, I have something to show you.” Richard got something from the table in the corner. He handed Maya a beautifully-decorated flat box, which he asked her to open.

Maya was nervous, and at the same time excited to find what is in the box. She slowly opened it. Inside was a long brown envelope which contained several documents. She started checking and reading the papers.

“Ricky, sweetheart, is this true? Paano? Kailan? Mabuti pumayag sila?” Maya asked one after the other, so overwhelmed with what she is seeing on the documents. One of them is a deed of sale for the Guevarra mansion, then another document transferring the ownership of the place to her.

“Sweetheart, slowly lang. Yes it is true. This house is yours, my wedding gift to you!” Richard said as he held Maya’s hand and brought it to his lips. ”I know how much you love this house. We have started our memories here too when I proposed to you in the azotea. This will be our home here in San Nicolas. It didn’t take much to convince Don Ramon and Donya Margarita when I met with them as soon as I returned to Manila the first time we where here when they found out that it would be my wedding gift to you. They told me na since wala silang mga anak, and pumanaw na rin ang nag-iisang kapatid ni Don Ramon, iyong pamangkin na lang niya ang magmamana and they feared that he will just sell the land to a developer and the house, gets sold piece by piece doon sa mga naghahanap ng parts of old houses bilang part ng mga pinapatayo nilang house! They know how much you love this place and that you, and me also, will take good care of it.”

“Sweetheart!” Then Maya started crying.

“Maya, sweetheart, why are you crying?” Richard asked worriedly. “Is this not okay? Sabihin mo lang, please.”

“Ricky, I’m crying because I am so happy! Sobra-sobra mo na akong pinasasaya.” Maya said in between sniffled. “Maraming-maraming salamat. I love you very very much.”

Maya touched both of Richard’s cheeks with her hands, and then kissed him on the lips. Richard responded and deepened the kiss. They started caressing each other, and it led to an exchange of  heated kisses.

Richard kissed Maya one more time, then carried her to the master’s bedroom of the house, with a big antique four-poster bed in the center. The room is lit in soft light,  and also decorated with Maya’s favorite flowers. Richard put down Maya on the edge of the bed and kissed her again.

“Maya, sweetheart, I love you very much. I can’t get enough of doing this, of being with you, and expressing what we feel like this.” He said as he kissed Maya on the lips, on her neck, and started caressing her back.

“Ricky, I feel the same. I love you, and I want to show it to you in every way I can!” Maya, so ovewhelmed with her feelings, and responding to Richard’s caressed, did her own caressing, touching Richard’s nape, his back, his face, and kissing him with abandon as well.

“Maya, sweeatheart, are you sure?” Richard asked, and when she nodded, he kissed her again, and started unbuttoning her wedding gown. He tried to curve his impatience and carefully opened the pearl buttons at the back of Maya’s gown one by one. He gave her a tender kiss in the back for each button he opened.

Finally, Richard managed to go all the buttons opened, and Maya’s gown fell on the floor. Maya stood before him in her camisole, looking so beautiful, so innocent, but with passion evident in her eyes and in her body. Maya can also see the passsion Ricky is trying to control in deference to her innocence. But she didn’t want control nor caution as she want to belong to him completely. She started unbuttoning Richard’s shirt, him having discarded his coat in the sala earlier. While at it, she planted heated kisses on his chest. Rchard responded with shortness of breath, and swallowing hard to hold on to some semblance of control, until he can’t take it anymore, and took things further.

Richard and Maya, passion unleashed, touched each other everywhere they could, exchanged passionate kisses in between, as if they can’t get enough of each other. All throughout the night, they repeatedly expressed their love for each other. Passion banked for the moment and from sheer exhaustion, they fell asleep in each other arms at dawn, as close as a man and a woman could be.

Doors – Chapter 15

Chapter 15
Engaged

Swaying to the music of their own making, with nary a space between them, Maya and Richard gazed lovingly at each other. Richard felt so complete with Maya in his arms. Maya, on the other hand, wanted to pinch herself to find out if she is really awake or just dreaming. She had thought of a moment like this when she was a teenager and having the usual crushes, but her youthful imaginings were nothing compared to the reality of being in Richard’s arms and being loved by him.

“Maya, sweetheart, are you hungry? Let’s have dinner na.” Richard said after a while. “Manang Fe’s niece prepared a lot of food. She also did all the arrangements here.”

“Really, sinong pamangkin ni Manang? Si Grace, iyong may events planning business diyan sa may plaza?” Maya asked, suddenly taking a closer look at everything around her, and the now vacant piano in the corner. Hindi na nga niya namalayan na umalis ang pianist and the singer.

“Yes, and we have Emman to thank for everything. I asked for his help. Lahat ng ito siya ang nag-coordinate kay Manang Fe for her pamangkin, the caretakers and the owners who graciously allowed us to use this azotea when they found out that it was you I was going to propose to! I just described to him what I wanted for you.” Richard explained as he pulled the chair for Maya. He sat down on her left side so they they could sit closer, and started serving her the mouthwatering appetizer Grace chose for this occasion, Maya’s favorite, so were the other dishes. Richard really wanted to make this night extra special for Maya, for them.

“Thank you very much, sweetheart, for all of this.” Maya said, with a sweeping gesture. She is just so happy and so overwhelmed by Richard’s gesture. “I love you very much.”

“I love you too, so very, very much. And only the best for you, my love. I had helped. You can thank Emman later, and Manang Fe when she returns. Emman is at your house now. And by the way, your mom and Mamang know I will propose. After you left my room last night, I went out again, and talked to them about this. Prior to that, as soon as we arrived, I also asked for your mom’s permission to propose to you.” Richard informed Maya.

“Kaya pala, you two were having a serious talk ha, when I returned to the sala yesterday.” Maya said, as she took a closer look at the ring he gave her. It is a very beautiful ring and she likes it very much.

Richard noticed Maya admiring her ring.

“Sweetheart, do you like it? We can have another one done for you, if you want?” Richard offered, wanting to know what Maya think of the ring.

“No, Ricky, I love this one. The ring is so beautiful. It also fits me perfectly.” Maya said as she puts her hand on top of Ricky’s.

“The ring was my mom’s. She gave it to me six months after you went away. She wanted me to give it to you, when the time comes. It has been in her family for generations and was handed down to the female line of the family. “Richard explained. “She said as she does not have a daughter, she wanted you to have it.”

“Sweetheart, please thank your mom for me. I will be honored to be the custodian of this ring for our daughter.” Maya blushed when she realized what she said. “I mean, errr, when we….you know…ah basta!”

“Why are you blushing sweetheart. It will happen. Hmmmm, let’s see, we will have a daughter, then a son, then a daughter, a son, and a daughter…” Richard told Maya teasingly. “I hope we will have half a dozen kids. I want a big family, being an only child! Kaya dapat we should have an early start, di na ako bumabata!”

“Ricky!” Maya blushed anew, and lovingly hit Richard in the arm. “Ikaw talaga!”

Richard gave Maya a glass of wine, and poured one for himself as well.

“To us, my Mrs. Lim-to-be! I love you very much.” Ricky toasted.

“To us, Mr. Lim ko. Mahal na mahal din kita! Thank you very much for loving me and giving me the most memorable proposal ever!” Maya replied.

Maya and Richad shared another sweet kiss after their toast. They alternately chatted, made loving looks at each other, held hands, while having a leisurely dinner in the azotea.

Several hours later, which they have not noticed passing by,as they were so focused on each other, they are still at the azotea.  The decided to walk a bit and found themselves standing near the edge of the azotea, gazing at the flickering light from the lake beyond the house, with Richard backhugging Maya, his chin on Maya’s shoulder.

“I can stay like this forever, with you.” Richard whispered. “I feel so complete. This is the happiest day of my life.”

“I never thought I could be this happy, us getting engaged, here in my favorite place.” Maya said, her heart feels like bursting from sheer happiness.

“Now, I understand why you love this place very much. It does a evoke a romantic feeling for bygone times when you are here.” Richard said. “I am glad the owner is still maintaining the house in pristine condition.”

“Yes, it has been with the Guevarras, for generations. The current owner is the only grandson of Don Fernando and Donya Angela. I wonder what will happen to the house after them. They are old and don’t have kids. They stay more nga in Manila than here. I wish their relatives who would have this house in the future will continue to love and keep it the way it is.” Maya said passionately.

Richard can hear the love and the worry for this place in Maya’s voice. An idea started germinating in his head, but he decided he will explore it further another time. He just wanted to continue enjoying this special moment with Maya.

Richard and Maya returned to the house close to midnight. They thought, it would just be them, as it was already late. But they were surprised when they ascended the stairs. The sala is still well-lit, and found Mommy Tessie, Mamang, Cristina Rose, and Emman chatting.

“Congratulations, Richard and Maya!” They chorused when they saw them entered the sala, hands still intertwined. Then they all stood up, hugged and kissed Richard and Maya, one after the other.

“Thank you, thank you!” Maya said with a huge smile and showed them her beautiful ring which elicited a round of ‘ohh’, and ‘ahh”.

“Maya, anak, masayang-masaya ako.” Mommy Tessie said emotionally. “Welcome to our family, Richard. And call me Mom na rin, hijo!”

“Thank you very much po Tita, errr, Mom!” Richard said. Then he proceeded to kiss Maya’s mom’ hands as a sign of respect for his future mother-in-law. He did the same to Mamang, and shook Cristina Rose’s hands. “Ipinapangako ko po na I will love Maya until we are old and gray and hinding-hindi ko siya paiiyakin. She will always be my number one priority, and the kids we will have in the future!”

“Tama, madaliin na iyang mga apo ko sa tuhod nang maabutan ko pa!” Mamang jested. “Sana, boy ang una dahil walang boy sa ating pamilya.”

“Bakit, ‘Mang, boy naman ako ah!” Cristina Rose interjected teasingly, which earned her a pinch in the ear from Mamang. “Bunso, Richard, congratulations. Ang pamangkin kong una, dapat honeymoon baby ha!”

“Kuteeee!” Maya said.”Grabe ka, wala pa ngang date ang wedding. Honeymoon na agad.”

“Maraming salamat, Ricky. I know my bunso is in good hands.” Mommy Tessie said simply, as she hugged Richard again.

Richard and Maya both hugged Emman too and thanked him for all he did for their most memorable night ever.

“Naku, bessie, Atty. Richard, basta para sa inyo. Eh, number one fan kaya ako ng love team niyo!” Emman told the couple. “Basta ako ang fairy godmother ng first born niyo ha!”

Richard and Maya, looked lovingly at each other and promised Emman that he will be.

Like the previous evening, the whole family, plus Emman, ended up chatting until past midnight.

Richard escorted Maya to her room, kissed her chastely, and then went to his room to spend another night in the bed he wish he can share now with Maya.

Sweet dreams to the most beautiful fiancee in the world. You don’t know, and I can’t even measure, how happy you are making me! This bed would have been heaven if you are sharing this with me, but I can wait! 🙂 I love you very much.

Maya smiled as she read Ricky’s text message.

Ikaw talaga, one track mind na naman, hahahahaha. Good night to the handsomest fiance in the world. I can’t ask for anything anymore. My heart is overflowing with joy and love for you. Good night. I love you.

Richard stayed three more days in San Nicolas. He needed to go back for work, while Maya has more than a week left before  she starts work. They agreed that Maya will spent several more days with her family, and return to Manila at a later date. Richard and Maya spent the days going around the places with special significant to Maya, and having their ‘you and me’ moments. They also made plans for his parents’ visit to her family for the pamamanhikan and to set the date of their wedding. Both can’t wait for that day to come so they can be together everyday of their lives, for always.
